A freelance writer who lives in Bury scooped £60,000 on ITV quiz show Beat the Chasers last night. Melissa, originally from San Diego, California, defeated the expert quizzers and now plans to use some of the cash so that she and her young son can visit family in Australia, as reported by The Express.
Only six seconds were left on the impressive contestant's clock and one on the Chasers' when host Bradley Walsh asked Melissa: "What Oxford museum was designed by Charles Robert Cockerell?"
She gave the correct answer of Ashmolean, leaving the Chasers without sufficient time to hit back. Melissa went on to dedicate her win to her grandmother, who was a massive fan of the show before she died at the age of 101 a couple of years ago.
"She watched The Chase every day and she would have been so proud," the shaking contestant said. Bradley replied: “She would have been really proud, everyone’s proud of you, that was great.
"She’s looking down on you now that’s for sure. She’s really looking after you.
"I’ve got to say you nailed it – there were some unbelievable answers." Melissa, who revealed she had an expansive perfume collection earlier in the show, went on to answer a question about perfume incorrectly, prompting Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis to comment: "I can’t believe you got the perfume question wrong."
The host then congratulated Melissa for several answers including one relating to Everton football manager Frank Lampard. "My partner’s a Liverpool fan," she pointed out.
Beat the Chasers continues on ITV on Thursday at 9pm.
