Free ‘Bop and Blether’ event for Dundee’s bus pass holders

A free tea dance is being hosted by Xplore Dundee for concessionary bus pass holders later this month. The event is being held at Marryat Hall, City Square- which is part of the Caird Hall complex - on August 9 from 11am.

The fun event is being backed by Dundee City Council to encourage older people to get back out and about again and restore confidence following the pandemic. It will include music, dancing, food and drinks, and games - plus an opportunity to mingle in a fun, social occasion.

Transport to the event is free by hopping on board the local Xplore Dundee bus into town and showing a concessionary travel pass. It had been set to take place last month but was postponed due to the heatwave.

Among those supporting the event are well-known local DJ Bill Lynch, who will provide music and compere the occasion.

Marc Winsland, Commercial Manager at Xplore Dundee, said: “We’re really pleased to be hosting this special tea dance event in Dundee city centre.

"We’ve always highly valued our concessionary passengers and worked as a company to make our service as appealing to both older generations and disabled travellers as possible.

“Since pandemic restrictions have eased, our different passengers groups have steadily returned to travel but there has been a lag with our concessionary ticket holders, who may not quite yet have the confidence to be out and about as they once were.”

And he added: “After conversations with different stakeholders, including Dundee City Council, the tea party idea was devised, with music, food and drink and more than anything, an opportunity to mingle.

“We’ve had a great response so far but there are still places available to concessionary pass holders who would like to share the day with us.”

Councillor Dorothy McHugh, secretary of the Dundee Pensioners' Forum, said: "I'm delighted Xplore Dundee has rearranged the Tea Dance. Any opportunity for older people to enjoy a social gathering will help to combat the growing problem of social isolation. A wee blether and some gentle exercise to music - highly recommended."
