Alex Austin, who was set to be an exclusive rights free agent, is staying with the New England Patriots in 2024.
The 22-year-old cornerback made the announcement on social media on Thursday afternoon. It’s a good move for the Patriots to continue facilitating depth in their defensive backfield with a young player who showed real promise as a rookie.
Austin signed with the Patriots in November after brief stints with the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans. The fit in New England was immediate, and Austin wasted no time making plays down the stretch. He had nine tackles, two pass deflections and one interception in five games with the Patriots.
“It’s official.. I’m back for another one!! Can’t wait to turn up with y’all this season… Let’s run it!” Austin posted on X.

Austin’s continued development will be something to keep an eye on next season, as he has shown flashes as a legitimate playmaker. It’s still surprising that two other teams passed on him.
He could end up being one of many defensive steals lingering from the Bill Belichick era.
