France warning as people urged to contact travel agents and airlines

Foreign Office guidance for anyone travelling from the UK to France has been updated, as people are expected to take to the streets in the coming weeks.

On Thursday, February 2, the government department urged all passengers to check with their operators before travelling. It comes as unions across France have called for further strike action.

Huge crowds marched across France on Tuesday (January 31), with more demonstrations expected on February 7 and February 11.

People across the country will strike to say "non" to President Emmanuel Macron's plan to make people work longer before retirement, Reuters reports.

Gov.uk advice now states: "Several unions have called for cross-sector strike action and demonstrations on Tuesday 7 and Saturday 11 February. Industrial action may start the evening before a strike day and run until the morning after.

"Localised or sector specific strikes could also occur outside these dates. Industrial action may lead to disruption to services. Please check the latest advice with operators before travelling, avoid demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities."
