Four of capital’s most stylish neighbourhoods in south London, poll finds

London’s infamous north-south rivalry has been reignited by a poll naming four of capital’s five most stylish neighbourhoods as south of the river.

The survey put Dulwich in first place, with Greenwich second, Wandsworth Common third, and Brixton fifth.

Camden, named fourth in the list, was the only area in north London that made the top of the list.

Locations were ranked according to the beauty of the building, vibrant cultural life, green spaces and the good mix of contemporary and classical architecture.

Findings came from a survey of 5,000 people from Furniturebox across the country and the capital.

Dulwich, where famous residents are said to include Jason Statham and his partner Rosie-Huntington Whiteley, features a famous picture gallery, a high street full of cafes, and independent shops and its own park.

Alex Vent, of Winkworth’s office in Dulwich, said the area was popular for its “village feel”, green spaces and good schools.

“If we are making a comparison between north and south, Dulwich is the Hampstead of the South,” he said.

“It has a village feel and wonderful architecture, good restaurants, bars and cafes, and cultural features such as the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

“There are good schools, lovely parks within a short walk and great train links to London Bridge and the West End.”

Guy Epps, of Winkworth’s office in Greenwich, said: “If you are moving to London, Greenwich is definitely the best place to be. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with some of the most beautiful and historic buildings in the capital, the Royal Observatory, the Royal Park, the Thames with riverboat services, Greenwich Market, the O2 and the attractions of Greenwich Peninsula.”

He added: “We see people moving across the river from the very different vibe of the City and Canary Wharf to move to Greenwich. It has something for everyone.”

A spokesperson for Furniturebox, an online furniture store, said any of the locations favoured in the survey would have been worthy of top spot.

“This is why London is such a stylish city, loved by artists, film-makers and tourists from all over the world.”
