Four NFL teams eligible to be forced to do Hard Knocks as series still not announced

Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets are among four teams in the frame to be featured on the NFL's annual documentary series Hard Knocks with the league unusually late in deciding which team will take part.

The Jets, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints and the Washington Commanders are the four eligible teams who could have their training camp caught on camera later this summer.

In 2022, it was confirmed by the end of March that the Detroit Lions would be the Hard Knocks team for last season, but the NFL is yet to make an announcement on who will be featured on the HBO Sports and NFL Films production.

The league can force teams to do Hard Knocks if they meet certain criteria. If a team has been on the show in the past 10 years, has a first-year head coach or has made the playoffs in either of the past two seasons, they are deemed exempt unless in rare circumstances they put themselves forward.

The Jets, Bears, Saints and Commanders are the four franchises that are not exempt, meaning the league will choose one for Hard Knocks. However, all four are said to be reluctant to take part.

The Jets are by far the most compelling option for viewers after the arrival of Rodgers in a blockbuster trade from the Green Bay Packers, but with huge expectations on the team to compete for a title, it seems the organisation wants to do all it can from adding to the media circus surrounding "Gang Green".

The Bears have indicated they are not keen to take part in what is sure to be a crucial summer of development for third-year quarterback Justin Fields. The Saints, too, have to make training camp count with a new QB in Derek Carr.

And the Commanders have a lot going on away from the team with Josh Harris' consortium's pending takeover from Daniel Snyder awaiting approval from the league. As a result, incumbent head coach Ron Rivera is on notice and has to perform well in the year ahead if he is to keep his job for any significant length of time under the new regime.

Eventually, the NFL will have to make a decision regardless of what teams say, but it is likely they will select the least stubborn team of the four if it does not get what it wants by asking to avoid angering owners unnecessarily.

A decision is due soon with training camps less than two months away from getting started, and the first episode of Hard Knocks will air in early August.
