Former US Open champion loses to teenager in history-making match at Roland Garros

  • French wildcard Moise Kouame, aged 17, made a historic Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros by defeating 37-year-old former US Open champion Marin Cilic in straight sets (7-6 6-1 6-1).
  • Kouame's victory makes him the youngest man to win a match at Roland Garros since 1991, marking a significant moment for the tournament.
  • He is also the youngest man to win a Grand Slam match since Bernard Tomic in 2009 and the youngest to win a Masters match since Rafael Nadal in 2003.
  • The Paris-born teenager, currently ranked 313 in the world, is coached by France’s former world No 7 Richard Gasquet, and his win follows the exit of French favourite Gael Monfils.
  • Kouame will now progress to the second round, where he is set to play either Britain’s 20th seed Cameron Norrie or Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo.
