Former star Eoghan McDermott has addressed viral rumours about allegations that were made against him on social media last year – as he launches legal action against Twitter.
The ex-2FM presenter broke his silence about the allegations as he tweeted a legal letter.
Alongside the letter, the Limerick native wrote: “A few months ago, false allegations were made about me. Despite not being investigated or verified, these allegations were spread widely, the effects of which I am still processing. I hope the below can close this chapter.”
In the letter it is stated that the woman acknowledges the falsity of her claim about their relationship and retracts it unequivocally and accepts that she also falsely claimed he had fled the country on account of her claims.
McDermott nor his rep did not respond for comment when contacted by us. Solicitors for the person who made the allegations against McDermott also did not respond for further comment.
McDermott has now launched legal action against Twitter.
His solicitors have filed papers against Twitter International Unlimited Company in the High Court.
The 38-year-old has been absent from the spotlight since last February, when he suddenly disappeared from the 2fm Breakfast show – which he hosted with Doireann Garrihy.
Two weeks later, RTÉ confirmed that he wouldn’t be returning to the show.
At the time, the broadcaster said: “RTÉ confirms that Eoghan McDermott will not be returning to RTÉ 2FM. His contract is due to expire shortly.”
“RTÉ is developing a new direction for the 2FM Breakfast Show which will be revealed in the coming weeks. Doireann Garrihy will remain with the show.”
RTÉ has since hired Donncha O’Callaghan and Carl Mullan to host 2fm Breakfast with Doireann.
