Former Rangers captain defends life beyond Gerrard as they discuss Goldson claim

Rangers legend Barry Ferguson thinks they made the right decision to part ways with Connor Goldson this summer - despite the player claiming that he still had a lot to offer.

The ex-Rangers vice-captain, 31, left for Aris Limassol in July after being forced to depart the club against his will.

During a recent interview, Goldson, who played over 300 times across a six-year period, mentioned the fact that Rangers never built on their Scottish Premiership success in 2021, and was critical of life beyond Steven Gerrard's Ibrox tenure - stating the Light Blues "have never been the same since".

Discussing Goldson's comments on the Go Radio Football Show, the former Rangers skipper said: "I don't like hearing that. I thought Gio [Van Bronckhorst] done a fine job. Rangers were maybe too quick in getting rid of Gio if I'm being honest.

"Steven Gerrard obviously brought the title back to the club, then moved on to Aston Villa and Gio come in and Gio had a style of play. I thought Gio done a fine job. He just had a few iffy results towards the end of his time at Rangers.

"At that time, Connor had signed a new contract, but personally, I thought it was the right time for Connor to go. I thought that he was a really good player for Rangers but it was time for him to move on.

"What I will say is that for the previous six years, he was one guy that did put his body on the line. I will give him that. I'm sure at times he says he could've played better but every time Connor Goldson gave you 100 per cent.

"When it came to the summer and he left, I just thought it was the right move for both Rangers and Connor."
