The ol’ riverboat may not be sailing off too far for its next stop.
According to ESPN senior NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler, former Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is expected to interview for the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator job. Rivera, who is also a former head coach of the Carolina Panthers, was fired by Washington on Jan. 8. He coached linebackers for the Eagles from 1999-2003.
Carolina hired Rivera as its fourth full-time head coach in 2011. He’d spend nearly nine seasons in Charlotte, becoming the winningest coach in franchise history (76-63-1).
Under Rivera, the Panthers became the first team in the NFC South’s current alignment to clinch three straight division titles. That three-year run, which lasted from 2013 to 2015, included the organization’s second NFC championship crown.
Rivera, however, was not as successful in the nation’s capital. The Commanders went 26-40-1 in his four seasons at the helm.
The Eagles and head coach Nick Sirianni, who are set to spice things up on their staff following a disappointing end to the season, are also expected to speak with former Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell for the position.
