A former Carolina Panthers defender may have found a new home, but for real this time.
As first reported by Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Las Vegas Raiders are signing defensive tackle Marquan McCall to their practice squad. The 6-foot-3, 379-pounder, who spent the 2022 season with the Panthers, was waived by the team back on Aug. 21.
Former head coach Frank Reich said the following of McCall’s release, which was a relatively puzzling move at the time:
“Honestly, we’re doin’ it now ’cause we think he’s gonna be on a roster somewhere. Just comes down to two things. It comes down to a fit for us and what we’re tryin’ to do, and then we’ve had a couple guys at that position who have really looked good.”
He would then be claimed by the New England Patriots a day later. But after failing a physical before signing, the 24-year-old reverted back to waivers and, eventually, hit the free agent market.
McCall, who joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Kentucky, appeared in 16 games during his rookie campaign in 2022. He recorded 15 tackles (two for a loss) and a quarterback hit.
