Former Nottingham Forest manager dismissed as statement released

Former Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka has lost his job with Spanish side Granada FC after a disappointing run of results.

The Spaniard joined the then La Liga side back in April, but was unable to save the team from the drop to the division below. Granada may have been hoping to bounce straight back at first time of asking, but they currently sit in eighth place in Segunda Division.

The team lost 1-0 against 10-man Oviedo on Sunday afternoon, despite their opponents being shown a red card in the 39th minute. Oviedo went on to score an 80th minute winner to extend Granada’s winless run to three games.

That result proved to be the final straw for the club’s hierarchy, with Granada releasing a statement on Wednesday morning. Granada CF has decided to do without the services of Aitor Karanka as coach of the first team,” the statement read.

“From the Club we want to thank Aitor Karanka for all his work and effort since his arrival last season, as well as wish him the best of luck in his future professional projects.”

The manager took charge of Forest for a year, between January 2018 and January 2019, managing the club for a total of 52 games. The Reds finished the 2017/18 season in 17th place in the Championship table.

Karanka’s final game in charge of the club came in the FA Cup third round clash against Chelsea. A game in which Forest lost 2-0 thanks to a brace from Alvaro Morata.

After leaving Forest, Karanka spent eight months in charge of fellow Championship side Birmingham City, before joining Granada in April 2022.
