Former Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren could be in line for a sensational return to the Premier League as Erik ten Hag's assistant at Manchester United. The Guardian claims McClaren is under consideration to become Ten Hag's number two if the Ajax manager is appointed Red Devils boss.
The former Magpies boss was Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant from 1999 to 2001 before becoming Middlesbrough boss later that year. Ten Hag held talks with the Red Devils last month and is believed to be the front runner to take over at the end of the season.
Should he be appointed at Old Trafford, it would be a role reversal for the duo, who worked together at FC Twente. It's believed Man United would be keen on Ten Hag's number two having Premier League experiences and McClaren would tick that box.

Ten Hag was one of the names linked with the vacant managerial position at Newcastle United when Steve Bruce was sacked earlier in the season. The Ajax boss is highly rated on the European circuit due to his fine job rebuilding the Eredivisie outfit following the departures of Frenkie De Jong and Matthias De Ligt.
McClaren has been out of management since taking over at Queen's Park Rangers in 2019, but held the role of technical director at Derby County from 2020-21. He stepped down from that role in September last year with the Rams entering administration. He was, of course, manager of Newcastle United in the 2015/16 season when the Magpies were relegated from the Premier League.
