Former NASA engineer's four simple steps to defog your car

As temperatures continue to plummet across the UK, many will be struggling every morning with their cars fogging up.

It can be more than an annoyance in the morning as many may be forced to wake up earlier to get to work on time due to spending a large chunk of their morning trying to defog their vehicle. However, an ex-NASA engineer and Youtuber has explained the quickest way to get rid of frost on your windscreen.

Through the power of some basic science, Mark Rober explains how to get rid of pesky frost in the morning with four easy steps.

He explains that: "some cars have a single button to defrost all the windows but a lot of cars have controls that look like these [showing a variety of temperature and fan controls on a vehicle's dashboard]". He added that while a lot of people choose to turn up their car's hot air or use a wide variety of combinations, there are in fact much easier ways of defogging their vehicle.

After performing some tests which included different ways of getting rid of frost on his car, Mark explains that he found the quickest and most effective way of doing it in four easy steps:

  • Firstly, you should turn on the car's heater to max settings because hot air can hold more moisture than cold air.
  • After this, you should turn on the air conditioning which will help to absorb any moisture that is still in the air.
  • The third step - which may be the most surprising for some - is turning off the air circulation within the car. This is because cold winter air has pretty much no absorption and therefore will do little to get rid of the moisture in the car.
  • His final step includes opening the windows slightly to let the humidity that's built up in the car get replaced by the dry winter air outside.

So next time your car is fogged up in the morning try these four steps - and it may get you moving quicker.
