The Kansas City Chiefs hung on to defeat the Baltimore Ravens in a Week 1 thriller, but a historic moment also occurred for the franchise’s record books.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes notably passed Len Dawson’s franchise-leading 28,507 passing yards mark last Thursday. He immediately received a congratulatory video message from retired former Chiefs star Alex Smith that was posted on the team’s social media.
“Patrick (Mahomes), you are now the all-time passing leader for the Chiefs. I’ve only got one question for you: What took you so long? In all seriousness, what you’ve done for this team, this city, and everyone whose ever worn a Chiefs jersey is nothing short of incredible,” said Smith. “You make us all proud, both on and off the field. From the very beginning, we all knew you were going to take this franchise to new heights, and that’s exactly what you’ve done.”

Smith started for the Chiefs from 2013 to 2017 and ranks fourth in franchise history with 17,608 passing yards.
“Keep doing what you’re doing, man. I’m so proud and beyond happy for everything you’ve accomplished,” said Smith. “Congrats, and here’s to many more records.”
Mahomes finished Thursday’s victory at Arrowhead Stadium, going 20 of 28 for 291 yards with a touchdown, interception, and a 101.9 quarterback rating.
