Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel ‘open to England job’ if Gareth Southgate sacked after World Cup

Sacked former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is interested in the England job, should it become available after the World Cup, according to reports.

Tuchel is currently out of work after his shock dismissal by Chelsea, coming less than 18 months after winning the Champions League and four months after the club's new owners took charge.

The German last week rejected his first job offer since leaving Stamford Bridge as Bayer Leverkusen came calling before eventually hiring ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso.

The Telegraph reports that Tuchel is open to succeeding Gareth Southgate should the Football Association look for a new head coach following the World Cup.

There has been no contact between the two parties, the reports confirms, and no suggestion that Southgate would leave the role. England’s performance at the World Cup, off the back of an underwhelming recent run of results, is expected to dictate Southgate’s future.

Southgate last week said he is planning on being in charge for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, telling reporters: “As we speak now I’m contracted to this time in 2024 but I am also well aware that in football you have to get results.

“So the plan is there and the desire for continuity is there too but I also don’t take for granted that you don’t underperform and expect to stay in that office.”
