Former Celtic player leaves high-flying SPFL outfit

Former Celtic star Aiden McGeady has left Ayr United.

The Championship league leaders have announced that the 38-year-old has departed the Honest Men by mutual consent.

The winger joined the Ayrshire side after leaving Hibernian in the summer of 2023.

He joined as Ayr's technical manager, while also fulfilling his role as a player.

Things didn't work out at Somerset Park for the ex-Republic of Ireland international though, as he made just 19 appearances, scoring twice.

He struggled to keep fit as he continued to be plagued by injuries.

McGeady made his final appearance for Ayr in mid-April against Arbroath. He failed to turn out for them this season, as Scott Brown's side made a flying start to the campaign.

A club statement reads: "Ayr United Football Club can confirm that Aiden McGeady has left the Club by mutual agreement.

"The Club would like to thank Aiden for his contribution since joining in July 2023 and wish him the best for his future."

Ayr are at the summit of Scotland's second tier on 18 points, just three above second-place Falkirk.

The sides meet at The Falkirk Stadium this weekend in what is sure to be one of the standout games across the SPFL.

Ayr are unbeaten so far this season under Broony, who joined as manager back in February, winning five and drawing three.

Falkirk have won the same amount of games, but have lost once. Crucially, they have played two games fewer than their rivals because of their participation in the Premier Sports Cup, where they were lauded for their valiant efforts against Celtic in a 4-2 defeat, as well as for putting Hearts out in the last-16 round.

Brown last week signed a contract extension at Ayr until the summer of 2027 after rejecting the chance to become Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone's new head coach following the sacking of Craig Levein.
