Former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn and former Sgt. Aquilino Gonell, who helped protect the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot of 2021, faced a negative response from some Republican legislators during their visit to the Pennsylvania House floor this week. Witnesses reported that the appearance of the two former officers triggered boos, walkouts, and disrespectful behavior from certain Republican members.
House Speaker Joanna McClinton condemned the GOP reaction as disrespectful and lacking in patriotism and common decency. She expressed disappointment in the behavior displayed towards the men responsible for defending democracy during a dark day in the nation's history.
Despite the negative response, Dunn expressed his gratitude for being recognized and honored to be present. The two officers had earlier participated in an event at the Pennsylvania Capitol coordinated by President Joe Biden's campaign.
During the event, Dunn and Gonell, flanked by Democratic lawmakers, warned about the threat they perceive from former President Donald Trump to democracy and community safety. They recounted the violence they endured during the Capitol attack by Trump supporters, emphasizing the need to defend democracy.
Republican Minority Leader Bryan Cutler applauded the officers and expressed his support for law enforcement. However, some Republican members reportedly walked out in protest, contrasting the usual respect shown to law enforcement and military personnel on the House floor.
The incident highlighted the political divisions surrounding the events of Jan. 6 and the ongoing debate over the role of former President Trump in inciting the violence. The clash in the Pennsylvania House reflects broader tensions within the political landscape as the nation grapples with the aftermath of the Capitol riot.
