A data breach at former ambulance operator Transformative Healthcare potentially exposed the names, Social Security numbers, medical details, and insurance information of 750,116 Massachusetts residents. The company and its former subsidiaries will pay $1 million over five years under a settlement announced by Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell on Oct. 19. The deal also resolves allegations that its Fallon and Lifeline ambulance units overbilled MassHealth, the state's Medicaid program.
The settlement includes no admission of liability, and the court still has to enter the judgment. For affected patients and former employees, the more pressing issue is that stolen Social Security numbers and medical records can be misused for years after a breach notice is forgotten.
