Liverpool beaten at Nottingham Forest by goal from forgotten former striker

Nottingham Forest recorded a 1-0 win over Liverpool on Saturday, with a former Reds forward scoring the winning goal.

Taiwo Awoniyi was on hand to prod home in the second half, giving the Premier League club's bottom club a memorable success over Jurgen Klopp's side. Had things worked out differently, the 25-year-old could have been donning the red of Liverpool instead.

The Nigerian forward joined the newly-promoted side this summer in a £17.5million deal from Union Berlin, having made a positive impression over two seasons spent with the Bundesliga club. As a result, Liverpool banked approximately £.1.5m having included a 10 per cent sell-on clause when offloading the striker to the German side in 2021.

Awoniyi was signed by Liverpool in 2015 for a reported fee of £400,000 but failed to make a single appearance for Liverpool due to work permit issues. The 25-year-old was loaned out a total of seven times by the Reds between 2015 and 2021 before being given the green-light to depart for a fee worth £6.5million.

His final season out on loan was at Union Berlin during the 2020/21 season and saw him score five goals in 21 appearances last campaign to help the club to a seventh-placed finish, in only their second-ever season in the German first division.

Forest then made their move for Awoniyi following his 15-goal haul in the German top-flight last term, a tally bettered only by five players.
