Yes, Samsung Unpacked is coming with new Galaxy S25 phones on January 22. But CES 2025 is here now, and to me, it's even more exciting as we get to preview concepts before they become real products. And Samsung Display is the perfect example of that.
I had a chance to check out some new slidable display devices that hint at what to expect in the not-too-distant future, as well as get up close with tri-fold devices that could signal what Samsung has planned for the next Galaxy Fold lineup.
Slidables Are (Almost) Here

The most interesting Samsung Display concept I saw is called the Slidable Flex Duet, which extends from 8.1 inches to 12.4 inches. I could see this coming in handy for running apps side by side or sharing a movie with friends on the go. 8.1 inches is already tablet territory, so who knows, we could be looking at one of the best Android tablets of tomorrow.
Samsung Display had a few other slidables to show off, including the Slidable Flex Solo, which expands one way from 8 inches to 17.3 inches. And the Slidable Flex Vertical has a screen that extends vertically from just 5.1 inches (small phones are back!) to 6.7 inches (the size of a traditional flagship).

It’s not new but we also got to go hands-on with the S Type multi-folding display, which could be the basis of a trifold Samsung smartphone. Huawei already has a tri-folding phone on the market, so it will be interesting to see if Samsung enters the fray.
While the S Type folding display is impressive and gorgeous, the folding action itself is clunky and the device seems a bit unwieldy. To be fair, this is not a final product.
The G Type foldable display has two outer panels that can be folded inwards, which is a bit less exciting but also less complicated, so it’s hard to know what type of form factor might take off.
With foldable phones making up less than 2% of the overall phone market, I really don’t know if these newfangled panels will be turned into real products by Samsung or others. Personally, I think rollable phones or slidables have more potential. It’s more subtle and invisible. But it’s cool to see these technologies maturing before our eyes.
