On arrival they found the body of Mr Pisani, who was being held at the jail.

He had been recalled to prison for breaching licence conditions after serving time for possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, and a file has been passed to the coroner.

An inquest was opened at Bolton Coroners' Court on Monday (January 31).

As a death in custody, it will be investigated by the Independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

The category B prison has capacity for 1,460 prisoners and is run by Sodexo Justice Services.

An HMP Forest Bank spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a prisoner sadly died at HMP Forest Bank on Wednesday, 19th January 2022.

"It would be inappropriate to comment any further at this stage."

A spokesperson for GMP said: "At around 7.30am on Wednesday 19 January 2022, police were called to HMP Forest Bank to reports of the concern for the welfare of a man.

"Officers attended and sadly found the body of a 46-year-old man who was being held at the prison.

"There are no suspicious circumstances and a file has been passed to the coroner."
