Ford electric vehicle owners in the U.S. and Canada can now access Tesla's extensive charging network, thanks to a recent agreement between the two automakers. This move allows Ford EV owners to utilize about 15,000 Tesla fast-charging plugs strategically located along travel corridors, significantly expanding their charging options. However, to use the Tesla network, Ford owners will need to obtain a free adapter from Ford, which will start shipping by the end of March.

Tesla's charging network, with over 26,000 plugs and nearly 2,400 Supercharger stations across the U.S. and Canada, is the largest and most well-placed in the region. Ford's decision to join Tesla's network marks a significant step in enhancing the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Most automakers, including Ford, have agreed to switch to Tesla's plug, known as the North American Charging Standard, due to its smaller and more user-friendly design compared to existing plugs on most EVs in the two countries. By incorporating Tesla plugs, Ford aims to double the charging network available to its EV owners, who currently number nearly 166,000 in the U.S.

Ken Williams, director of charging and energy services at Ford, emphasized the importance of addressing EV owners' charging needs, despite the fact that most charging occurs at home. Ford is offering the free adapters to its customers, who can reserve them on the Ford website from Thursday until June 30. Each vehicle will be eligible for one free adapter.

The Tesla network was activated on Wednesday, with software updates enabling Ford vehicles to charge at Tesla stations being distributed simultaneously. Ford plans to transition to Tesla's charging connector with its second-generation EVs starting next year. Customers will be responsible for paying for the electricity they use at Tesla stations, with pricing information available on Ford's mobile app and public charging apps accessible via vehicle touch screens.
