A group of footballers training on a Merseyside beach sprung into action when they noticed a couple had become stuck in the sand.
On Monday, June 3, at around 8pm Southport FC were at Crosby Beach for pre-season training. Just as the session was coming to a close the squad noticed two people in distress.
After running over they discovered a couple had become stuck in the sand with one person up to their waist. The players then set to work to free them and over the next ten minutes helped to bring them both to safety.
Joe Cunliffe, social media manager for Southport FC who was at the scene last night, said: "As training was coming to an end two of our lads spotted them in the sand and ran over. We got the woman out easily but the man was in the sand up to his waist and we called 999.

"The woman was distressed but the man was keeping calm considering what was going on but he was really stuck and it took a while to drag him out. The lads got him out and helped him up and then firefighters started coming down the beach."
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said that nobody was injured during the incident and, after being checked over, the two people were escorted to Crosby leisure centre.
Joe told the ECHO: "It was good that we were there because there were not a lot of people around. Everyone was quite shocked by what happened."
A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: "Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident on the evening of Monday, June 3 near to Crosby Leisure Centre, Mariners Road, Blundellsands. Crews were alerted at 19.49 and two fire engines and the search and rescue team were on scene at 7.56pm
