Authorities in Arizona have released further details about the person they are urgently trying to identify in the suspected abduction of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie. The FBI says the person appears to be an “armed individual” who tampered with the door camera at Nancy’s home on the morning she disappeared.
On Tuesday, FBI director Kash Patel shared four black-and-white images and short video clips on X that were recovered from “residual data located in backend systems”. The footage shows a masked figure in gloves, long sleeves and a backpack walking up to Nancy’s front door, seemingly wearing a holster and interfering with the Google Nest doorbell camera. In one sequence, the person appears to use nearby flowers to block the lens before the camera is disabled.
Patel said investigators had spent days trying to recover material that “may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors — including the removal of recording devices”. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has previously confirmed that the doorbell camera at Nancy’s home, just outside Tucson, was disconnected in the early hours of 1 February, around the time authorities believe she was taken from the property against her will.
The FBI’s newly released details about the man seen on Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera may shed light on why agents were observed erecting a white tent over the front entrance of her Tucson home earlier today.
The FBI’s Operational Technology Division may have been carefully measuring the former position of the doorbell camera, along with other immovable features of the arched entryway.
By analysing the camera’s angle and those fixed reference points on the porch — and applying some calculations — investigators could estimate the height of the individual they’re now calling a suspect. In a statement, they said the man stands between 5’9″ and 5’10” with an average build.
The FBI has previously demonstrated success in determining accurate height estimates from fixed surveillance footage when stable objects are present for comparison.
Blood found on her front porch has been matched to Nancy’s DNA, and detectives have said one challenge early on was that Nancy did not have an active subscription for the doorbell camera, so footage could not initially be retrieved.

Nancy was last seen at home on 31 January and reported missing the next day after she did not arrive at church, with investigators saying she needs daily medication for high blood pressure and heart issues, including a pacemaker.
Her disappearance, and a series of alleged ransom letters sent to media outlets, has gripped the US as law enforcement tries to determine whether the demands are credible and whether the family has had any direct contact with the kidnappers. Officials say they are not aware of any continued communication and have not yet identified a suspect or person of interest.
Savannah Guthrie has shared some of the newly released images on Instagram with the caption: “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home”, alongside contact details for the FBI and local sheriff’s office. In a separate video message, she said: “We are at an hour of desperation … And we need your help”, urging people across the US to report anything that might assist the search.
The FBI has deployed additional agents and specialists to Tucson and says it is running a 24-hour command post with crisis management staff, analysts and investigators. “Someone has that one piece of information that can help us bring Nancy home,” the agency said.
