Almonds are a popular and nutritious snack, rich in healthy fats, protein, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals. However, some foods when paired with almonds may lead to digestive issues, hinder nutrient absorption, or cause adverse health effects.
In Ayurveda, almonds should not be paired with certain foods due to viruddha ahara (incompatible food combinations), which can disturb digestion and create toxins (ama). Combining almonds with dairy, especially yogurt, can cause digestive imbalance due to their differing digestive processes (vipaka). Eating almonds with salty or acidic foods may aggravate pitta dosha and hinder nutrient absorption. Ayurveda recommends consuming almonds alone after soaking and peeling to enhance digestion, promote ojas (vitality), and balance vata and pitta without aggravating kapha.
