Foden unlucky, Mahrez magic, De Bruyne class - Man City player ratings from international break

Ederson

The Manchester City goalkeeper appeared to move above Liverpool's Alisson in the Brazil pecking order, but illness kept him out against Morocco and another chance to start for his country was missed. No rating.

Kyle Walker

Two starts for England and two wins. Walker has faced competition for his international place, but he kept both Kieran Trippier and Reece James on the bench, and Trent Alexander-Arnold wasn't selected. He's still Gareth Southgate's number one. Or two. 7.

Ruben Dias

Continued his fine City form with Portugal, albeit against limited opposition. Two starts, two clean sheets and two wins for Dias keeps the momentum going. 7.

John Stones

Stones is firmly first choice at the back for England these days, and put in a strong performance away at Italy alongside Manchester United's Harry Maguire. Another who kept the good form up. 7.

Aymeric Laporte

Spain's centre-back ranks are crowded, even without Sergio Ramos, and new manager Luis de la Fuente went for rotation this week. Laporte started vs Norway and kept a clean sheet, while those picked to face Scotland conceded twice in a shock defeat. 6.

Manuel Akanji

One day Akanji will probably have a bad game, but that wasn't to come this week. 80 minutes vs Belarus and 90 vs Israel saw Akanji help Switzerland to two clean sheets and six points. 7.

Nathan Ake

Pep Guardiola rang up Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman to cheekily ask that Ake was looked after, such is his importance these days to City. So too is he important for his country, starting at left-back in the heavy defeat to France, but bouncing back with two goals in a 3-0 win over Gibraltar. 8.

Rico Lewis

The rise and rise of Lewis continues as he earned his first England under-21 cap in defeat to Croatia on Tuesday, having only made three under-19 caps and skipping the under-20s completely. 6.

Sergio Gomez

City were reminded that Gomez is not a left-back as he resumed his attacking midfield role for Spain under-21s this week, playing 65 minutes vs Switzerland and 45 against France - both on the wing. 6.

Rodri

Normally Rodri goes unnoticed in midfield as he simply does everything right. However, he attracted criticism for apparently targeting Arsenal's Martin Odegaard in a firm-but-fair tackle vs Norway, and then was criticised for calling Scotland's tactics "rubbish" in a shock defeat for Spain. Still, he captained his country at Hampden Park and appears central to Spain's new era. 6.

Kalvin Phillips

Phillips impressed in a rare 90 minutes when he started for England in Italy, before watching their Ukraine win from the bench. Slowly but surely, Phillips is getting his minutes up and beginning to look like the player he was before City signed him. 6.

Kevin De Bruyne

Appointed Belgium's new captain, De Bruyne featured as they beat Sweden, and then recorded two assists and a goal in the 3-2 win over Germany. Another sign he's getting back to his best. 8.

Bernardo Silva

Portugal were expected to beat Liechtenstein and Luxembourg and did so comfortably. Bernardo's two goals and one assist mean he'll return to City in as good form as he left. 8.

Phil Foden

Subbed on in the second half of England's win over Italy, Foden was unlucky to be replaced just 12 minutes later after Luke Shaw was sent off. Then, after training on Saturday, he had emergency surgery to remove his appendix and faces a spell out while he recovers. A low rating through absolutely no fault of his own. 3.

Jack Grealish

Often forced to feed on substitute appearances for England, Grealish was a popular starter vs Italy and justified his inclusion. He was replaced by James Maddison vs Ukraine, although that was more for rotation purposes as Grealish continues to impress on the left-wing. 6.

Riyad Mahrez

City will need Mahrez when Foden is out, so it helps that he netted Algeria's winning goal vs Niger in the 90th minute, before setting up the only goal against the same opposition on Monday. Algeria have now qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations, as they would expect to, giving Mahrez another shot at lifting Africa's biggest prize. 9.

Cole Palmer

Palmer collected some useful minutes for England under-21s and was a bright spark in defeat to Croatia. His role for City will always reduce his minutes, so seeing him with a freer role and confidence is a positive. 6.

Julian Alvarez

Argentina gave all of their World Cup winners a stunning homecoming last week, starting the same XI vs Panama as the World Cup final team. The City striker was replaced at half-time and didn't play against Curacao, leaving him fresh for a potential start vs Liverpool this weekend. 6

Erling Haaland

Haaland withdrew from Norway's games with injury and faces a race to be fit for City's clash with Liverpool, having gone to hospital in Barcelona for tests on his groin issue. No rating.
