Fly Ash Road Base Performance: Field data shows 83% stiffness gain; cracking still limits durability

It is not always necessary to remove the old pavement and lay new quarry material to rebuild a failing road. The state of Wisconsin experimented with a strategy to recycle the current road and strengthen it using coal fly ash, a byproduct of power generation. In October 2001, the road was repaired utilising full-depth reclamation on County Trunk Highway JK in Waukesha County. Rather than cart off the worn asphalt, they pulverised it, blended it with water and self-cementing fly ash, and pressed it into a fresh road base.
