Five things to know about Serena Williams’ return to Wimbledon

  • Serena Williams , aged 44, has been granted the final wildcard spot to compete in the Wimbledon singles draw, marking her return to the tournament.
  • She is scheduled to face Australia's Maya Joint in her first-round match on Tuesday 30 July, expected to be the final match on Centre Court around 5:30pm BST.
  • This appearance will be Williams' first singles match in four years, following her apparent farewell to the sport at the 2022 US Open and her last Wimbledon singles match in 2022.
  • Williams will also be competing in the women's doubles alongside her sister Venus, with their first-round match against Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra scheduled for either Thursday 2 July or Friday 3 July.
  • The 23-time Grand Slam champion expressed her motivation for accepting the wildcard, stating it was a unique opportunity to showcase her abilities, having recently made a comeback playing doubles at Queen's and Berlin.
