While navigating the Pacific waters near Baja California’s remote Cedros Island in Mexico, an angling crew made a startling discovery: a lone dog paddling in the open ocean far from land. According to Arturo Chacon, owner of Tag Cabo Sportfishing, the dog appeared exhausted and was swimming away from the island when the crew turned the boat around to rescue him.
Chacon detailed the rescue in a post published by Cabo Sportfishing Magazine and attributed the original rescue footage to Tag Cabo Sportfishing. The company, which Chacon founded and owns, operates out of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.
Chacon also told the story on Instagram. He said the group started the morning preparing for a day of fishing around Cedros Island. A thunderstorm had moved through the area before the crew headed offshore, according to his account.
Then the captain spotted something remarkable.
After leaving the marina, the fishermen saw birds working the water and dolphins nearby. They investigated the activity in search of fish, but the action disappeared. The boat then headed toward another fishing area. That was when the captain spotted something in the water.

Chacón initially dismissed the captain’s claim, assuming he had merely spotted a common sea lion, but quickly ordered the boat to turn back when the captain insisted it was a dog. When they reached the animal, Chacon said the dog was swimming alone about a mile from shore.
The dog appeared exhausted and seemed to be moving farther away from the island. The fishermen did not know how long he had been in the water or how he had gotten so far offshore.
The crew maneuvered alongside the dog and brought him onboard, according to Chacon’s account. The fishermen then gave the dog fresh water and food while he recovered. They continued fishing while the dog rested aboard the boat.
Chacon said the dog was tired but gradually became more active. The captain also shared two burritos with the unexpected passenger.
The circumstances surrounding the dog’s swim remain unknown. Chacon speculated that the earlier thunderstorm could have frightened the animal.
The dog eventually became part of the fishing crew for several hours, according to Chacon. Then, reportedly, the fishing improved.
Chacon reported that the group began catching big white sea bass and yellowtail. By about 10 a.m., he said, the fishing bag was full. With their catch limits met by mid-morning, the crew playfully credited their unexpected passenger with bringing them good fortune. The fishing success became another memorable part of the unusual outing, but the crew’s priority remained getting the dog safely back to shore.
Back at the Cedros Island marina, locals immediately recognized the dog and facilitated his return home.
