First picture of Walworth market ‘knife rampage’ victim, 77, as suspect appears in court

Hilkiah McLeggan killed at East Street Market, Southwark - (Metropolitan Police)

This is the first picture of a man knifed to death in front of shoppers at a historic Sunday market.

Hilkiah McLeggan, 77, was pronounced dead at the scene of a triple stabbing rampage in Walworth.

Musse Ali, 66, appeared in court charged with Mr McLeggan’s murder and attacking two other men during the knife attack at Southwark’s East Street Market at 10.40am on Sunday.

The other victims are seriously injured in hospital, one in a critical condition.

The horror only came to an end when hero stallholders fought off the suspected knifeman with a metal bars and held him until officers arrived.

The Metropolitan Police thanked “brave members of the public who assisted police at the scene”.

Ali, of no fixed address, spoke only to confirm his name and address via a Somalian interpreter, as he appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to face charges of one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one of knife possession.

Scotland Yard said it was not a terrorist attack and urged the public not to speculate on any potential motive.

There has been a market at East Street since the 16th century and it now sells fresh fruit and vegetables along with other goods.

District Judge Nigel McLean told Ali, who wore a grey tracksuit as he stood in the dock: “The charges you face are matters that can only be tried in crown court in the main.

“My only function today is to formally send you to the Central Criminal Court where your trial will take place.”

Ali was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Wednesday for his bail to be determined and on December 10 for a plea hearing.

Mr McLeggan’s family have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.

Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, lead for policing in Southwark, said: “This was a horrific incident where a man had lost his life and two other people received serious injuries.

“The incident has understandably caused concern amongst the local community. There will be an increased policing presence in the Walworth area as we work alongside our partners to provide reassurance to local people and small businesses operating in East Street.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank brave members of the public who assisted police at the scene.

“Lastly we are aware of posts circulating on social media, implying that this was a terrorist incident. Our enquiries indicate this is not the case and we ask the public not to speculate.”

Anyone with information has been asked to call police on 101, quoting reference 2690/10Nov.
