Fire crews race to Glasgow Airport runway after emergency landing amid 'burning smell'

An American Airlines flight declared a mid-air emergency as it flew over Orkney before diverting to Glasgow Airport.

The AAL71 flight from Frankfurt, Germany, to Dallas in Texas sent out the 7700 squawk code following reports of a ‘strong burning smell’ in the cabin shortly after 11am on Sunday.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner turned south and safely landed on the runway at around 12.25pm, where it was met by at least four fire engines and paramedics.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to assist at the airport but crews have since been stood down.

A spokesperson for the airline confirmed the emergency landing was due to a 'possible mechanical issue'.

They said: "American Airlines flight 71 from Frankfurt (FRA) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) diverted to Glasgow International Airport (GLA) in Scotland, due to a possible mechanical issue. The aircraft landed safely and taxied to the gate.

"Our maintenance team is evaluating the aircraft. We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans, and we apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused. Our team is working to get passengers to Dallas/Fort Worth as soon as possible."

Glasgow Airport have been contacted for comment.
