'Final Fantasy VII Revelation' Devs Want Game's Climax to be 'Something That Belongs to You'

Square Enix used a PAX West panel to give fans their deepest look yet at "Final Fantasy VII Revelation," walking through new gameplay mechanics while carefully staying quiet about how the trilogy actually ends.

Game director Naoki Hamaguchi and battle director Teruki Endo made clear that some things are best left for players to experience on their own terms.

'Final Fantasy VII' Devs Don't Want to Spoil Ending

Square Enix's developers over at the PAX West panel shared a parting message to the audience, saying that "We hope you experience the climax as something that's not explained to you by someone else, but rather, as something that belongs to you."

Hamaguchi reflected on the broader journey of the remake trilogy, telling the crowd, "The reunions we've built up throughout the trilogy, the bonds with our companions, and the final resolve. All of this leads to this moment, the third title."

The game's director wishes that players enjoy the final moments of the game while carrying all the experience they have gathered in all three parts of the three-part remake.

That reluctance to spoil the ending comes down to how much weight this final chapter carries. "Final Fantasy VII" originally concluded 30 years ago, and fans have spent years speculating whether "Revelation" will stay faithful to that original conclusion or lean into some of the trilogy's larger narrative twists.

Hamaguchi previously told VGC he feels confident about how the ending turned out, adding that the team is excited to see how fans react once they finally reach it themselves.

Square Enix Deep Dive on New FITS System

Much of the panel focused on the new FITS system, which gives each playable character access to four distinct outfits tied to different combat styles: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner. Endo explained that equipping the Summoner FITS lets a character perform synergy attacks alongside their summon, such as Ifrit, letting both fight in coordination during battle.

Each entry in the remake trilogy has centered around its own core theme, with Endo and Hamaguchi noting that "Remake" focused on Reunion, "Rebirth" focused on Bonds, and "Final Fantasy VII: Revelation" will focus on Resolve. The team has built a theme directly from the choices players have made across the entire series.

According to the developers, the accumulated decisions and side content players engage with throughout their journey shape the sense of resolve they ultimately carry into the game's climactic final battle.

'Final Fantasy VII Revelation' New Characters

The panel gave extended attention to "Final Fantasy VII: Revelation's" two new playable characters, Cid and Vincent.

Cid fights using a lance, a new weapon type in the series that leans into aerial combat, letting him impale enemies with magical strikes before launching into follow-up attacks. Vincent, whose reveal drew loud cheers from the crowd, specializes in mid-range combat using firearms, fighting more aggressively than Barret while weaving evasive maneuvers between his attacks.

Endo confirmed Vincent can transform at any point during battle, a deliberate choice made to support a wider variety of playstyles without locking the ability behind specific requirements.

Beyond combat, Hamaguchi also confirmed a crossover event with "Final Fantasy XIV" called Beyond the Lifestream, arriving alongside that game's Evercold expansion in January 2027 with three difficulty tiers.

Square Enix also confirmed two separate story expansions planned for "Revelation" after launch. One centered on Sephiroth and another focused on Vincent's history with the Turks prior to the events of the original game, giving fans plenty more to look forward to even after the main story concludes.
