Final Fantasy 16 causing some PS5s to overheat and crash during cutscene

Final Fantasy 16 is reportedly causing some PS5s to overheat and crash.

The latest instalment in the fantasy video game series has generated plenty of conversation, with some advocating a boycott of the game and the lead producer saying he was hoping to regain the trust of fans after criticism of Final Fantasy 15. The response to the new game has been generally positive, with Metacritic reporting a score of 88/100 based on critic reviews and 8.3/10 based on user reviews.

However, some have reported a serious technical issue with the game on PlayStation 5. Last week, Twitter user @adliew claimed their console had shut down due to overheating during a cutscene, and linked to a Reddit thread of others experiencing similar issues.

Another Twitter user, @AlissonPinho_, replied saying they had experienced the same issue. They said: “Same scene, still waiting for a statement from Square regarding the overheating issues. I bought a new PS5 but I still haven't had the courage to test the game on the new device. I think I'm traumatised.”

The accompanying video shows the PS5 making a large amount of noise before switching off. Furthermore, it’s unclear what exactly is causing the problem.

Sometimes a PS5 can build up dust which can clog the fans and cause overheating, but in this instance @AlissonPinho_ insisted that their console was clean and in a well ventilated space. It was also claimed by some that this was only an issue when the game’s Graphic mode was turned on.

However, Game Informer said it had experienced the game crashing with the mode disabled. Final Fantasy’s developer, Square Enix, has not announced a patch to address the issue, which could signal it is only affecting a small number of players.

Final Fantasy is a timed exclusive to the PS5. It can be purchased via Argos, Game, HMV, The Game Collection and 365 Games.
