Mumbai: Legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 90.
The veteran filmmaker breathed his last at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai.
The legendary filmmaker is survived by wife Nira Benegal and daughter, Pia Benegal.

His daughter Pia said that her father was suffering from chronic kidney disease.

"He passed away at 6.38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital Mumbai Central. He had been suffering from chronic kidney disease for several years but it had gotten very bad. That's the reason for his death," Pia said.

The filmmaker celebrated his birthday on December 14 with his friends and family.
Padma Shri & Padma Bhushan
Benegal was honoured by the Centre with the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991.
He was born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad.
