A ferry carrying 116 passengers capsized off the Pomeroon coast late Saturday night, triggering a frantic overnight search-and-rescue operation, eight people have been rescued so far.

The MV Barima, which operates the Georgetown–North West District route, departed Georgetown at approximately 3.15 pm on Saturday and was en route to Port Kaituma when it capsized near Iron Punt around 11.00 pm, public works minister Juan Edghill said in an early morning update.
Timehri Air Traffic Control Towers received a distress call, prompting an immediate emergency response. The Guyana Defence Force, Coast Guard and private vessels were mobilised to the scene. The vessel was equipped with more than 200 life jackets, according to Edghill.
Rescue efforts continued into Sunday morning as authorities worked to account for all passengers aboard the ill-fated vessel. The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
