Federal regulators have applied their most serious recall classification to a batch of prefilled morphine syringes that may actually contain a more powerful opioid. The classification covers roughly 625,500 syringes shipped to hospitals, surgery centers, and health systems across the United States, and it means the agency considers a wrong-drug administration likely to cause serious injury or death.
The people most exposed are not filling a prescription at a pharmacy counter. They are hospital patients receiving injected pain medicine after surgery, during labor, in emergency departments, or in cancer and palliative care. Because the mislabeled package looks like an ordinary morphine unit, the error would not be visible to the patient and, in most cases, not to the family member sitting beside the bed either.
