FDA travels to Mexico weeks after Taylor Farms linked to parasite outbreak

  • Food and Drug Administration officials traveled to Mexico to inspect a Taylor Farms processing facility linked to a nationwide cyclospora outbreak , according to a new report.
  • Investigators sought to reconstruct the conditions in which lettuce was grown and gathered, reviewing weather records and satellite imagery and gathering testing materials. They are also expected to inspect the site’s fields.
  • The CDC has reported nearly 14,000 confirmed cyclosporiasis cases, hundreds of hospitalizations, and two deaths across the country, with Michigan as the epicenter.
  • Food safety experts criticized the FDA for waiting weeks to inspect the facility, which had not been visited by federal inspectors since 2019.
  • Taylor Farms suspended production at the Mexican facility on July 18 and recalled more than three million pounds of iceberg lettuce.
