FDA-Approved Brytly Becomes First Over-the-Counter Apraclonidine Eye Drop, Limited to Twice Daily with Contact Lens Precautions

The FDA on October 16 approved Brytly, an over-the-counter eye drop for redness caused by minor irritation and the first nonprescription product to contain apraclonidine, according to an FDA statement. The drop, made by Alcon, is approved for adults and children 12 and older and should be used no more than twice a day.

The label carries clear limits. People who wear contact lenses should remove them before using the drop and wait at least 10 minutes before putting them back in. Anyone using other eye drops should wait five minutes between products.
