FBI Director: Thomas Crooks Did Not Use Ladder In Attack

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray speaks during the Anti-Defamation League's "Never is Now" summit at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York

FBI Director Christopher Wray revealed that the agency is still investigating how Thomas Matthew Crooks gained access to the roof of a building to target former President Donald Trump. Despite a 5-foot ladder purchase found on Crooks' body, the FBI does not believe he used it to climb onto the roof.

During a hearing with the House Judiciary Committee, Wray stated that they suspect Crooks utilized mechanical equipment and the building's piping to reach the roof on July 13. The absence of the ladder at the scene further supports this theory.

Wray clarified that although Crooks had purchased a ladder, it was not located at the site of the incident. This discrepancy has led investigators to believe that Crooks employed alternative means to access the roof, such as the building's infrastructure.

The FBI's ongoing investigation aims to determine the exact method Crooks used to reach the roof and carry out the attack. The agency is exploring various possibilities, including the use of equipment and structures available on the building's exterior.

As the investigation continues, the FBI is working to piece together the events leading up to the incident and gather evidence to support their findings. The absence of the ladder at the scene has raised questions about Crooks' entry onto the roof and prompted further scrutiny into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
