A multiple murderer from Renfrewshire who died in jail is the subject of a Fatal Accident Inquiry that will begin later this year.
Robert Chalmers passed away at the Western General Hospital, in Edinburgh, in April last year after contracting pneumonia.
The twisted killer had been serving a life sentence for the murder of 24-year-old Samantha Wright in 2009.
He killed the young woman while on licence for a previous murder.
The 69-year-old had served nine years of a life sentence for killing a man in Johnstone in December 1973.
He stabbed drinking friend and workmate William White, 47, after a row at the victim’s home on Beech Road.
After his release, Chalmers moved to Edinburgh, where he committed his second murder.
Last week, the Crown Office announced that a two-day Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) will be held at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in September to examine the circumstances surrounding his death.
A preliminary hearing is due to take place next month.
Dad-of-11 Chalmers, who worked as a handyman and labourer before being locked up, had been moved from prison in the capital after he suffered chest pains and shortness of breath.
He stood trial for Samantha’s murder at the High Court in Edinburgh in 2011 and was told he must serve a minimum of 23 years before being considered for parole.
Samantha, who was from Stevenage, in Hertfordshire, had been living at Chalmers’ home in Magdalene Drive, Edinburgh.
Her remains were found in October 2009, after her concerned family reported her missing.
Police believe she died sometime around June 2008 and Chalmers then partially dismembered her body before hiding it in a wheelie bin.
At his 2011 trial, the jury was told he used air fresheners and fly-spray to hide the smell.
The FAI will investigate the medical care Chalmers received within prison and the Western General Hospital.
Andy Shanks, who leads on fatalities investigations for the Crown Office, said: “The death of Robert Chalmers occurred while in legal custody and, as such, a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory.”
