Fantasy Premier League changes in 2022/23 as World Cup 2022 rule added to FPL

Fantasy Premier League has resisted making too many changes to their tried and tested winning formula ahead of the 2022/23 season.

However, one change that will be welcomed is the introduction of an extra layer of security to Fantasy Premier League accounts.

Last season's campaign was disrupted by a security breach which saw large numbers of accounts hacked. Victims had their teams ripped apart, with lesser players transferred in. It not only cost players points but left many unable to restore their squad without further points penalties.

Thankfully, despite denying a breach at the time, FPL have set up two-factor authentication for Fantasy accounts ahead of the new season.

With regards to the main gameplay, the major change is the addition of unlimited transfers between Gameweek 16 and GW17 to help manage the uncertainty of the FIFA World Cup.

The Premier League halts on Saturday, November 21 – a week before the opening match of Qatar 2022 – and return five weeks later on Monday, December 26.

With injuries, form and fatigue all likely to be affected by the winter World Cup, FPL managers have been handed an unlimited supply of permanent transfers ahead of the GW17 deadline on Boxing Day.

Managers will be able to make unlimited free transfers between Saturday, November 12 (1.30pm) following the GW16 deadline and before the GW17 deadline on Monday, December 26 (1.30pm).

Once the season is underway it now means there will now be three wildcards available. The first will run between GW2 and GW16 and will be followed by the World Cup wildcard, with a final wildcard on offer between GW18 and GW38.

One player sure to be involved in Qatar is Chelsea's Kai Havertz and he is among ten players who have seen their positions amended from last season.

Havertz has been reclassified as a striker after scoring 112 points as a midfielder in 2021/22. He will set you back £8million.

Going the other way, however, is Newcastle's Allan Saint-Maximin. The Frenchman notched up 116 points last term and is now available to fill a midfield berth for £6.5million.

Magpies team-mate Joelinton (£6m) has also transitioned from a forward to a midfielder, along with Wolves' Hwang Hee-Chan (£6m), Leeds' Rodrigo (£6m) and Crystal Palace's Jordan Ayew (£5.5m).

On the back of a prolific Premier League season in which he scored 15 goals, Liverpool's Diogo Jota (£9m) now lines up among the forwards. He is joined by Brentford's Bryan Mbuemo (£6m), whose debut campaign saw him listed as a midfielder.

Further back, team-mate Sergi Canos (£5m) has gone from a midfielder to a defender, as has Leeds' Stuart Dallas (£5m). Both, however, will miss the opening day, with Canos suspended and Dallas ruled out with a femoral fracture.
