Fans snap up 65,000 tickets for England vs USA friendly only hours after Euro heroes’ homecoming goes on sale

The Football Association sold more than 65,000 tickets in under 24 hours to watch England against the USA at Wembley in October, as Lionesses fever grips the country.

The FA announced the October 7 friendly, which is dependent on England qualifying for the World Cup, at 2pm on Tuesday.

That prompted a huge surge in demand for tickets which saw the organisation's website crash and online queues of over 45,000 people.

By this 10am this morning, more than two-thirds of the 90,000-seater national stadium had already sold out, with another capacity crowd expected.

More than 87,000 supporters watched England win the European Championship at Wembley on Sunday, with a record 17.4 million peak audience tuning in on BBC One.

The USA are the reigning world champions after beating England in the semi-final in France three years ago, with Sarina Wiegman's side aiming to dethrone them at next summer's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
