Fans of Netflix's Umbrella Academy left confused by Season 3's 'WTF' ending

After a near two-year wait, Umbrella Academy fans have spent the last week devouring the Netflix show's third season and, while many have loved it, lots of viewers have been left perplexed by its "WTF" ending. Caution: spoilers ahead.

The latest season picked up where the previous ended, with the super-powered Hargreeves family landing in a new alternate reality - with its own alternative to the Umbrella Academy, the Sparrow Academy.

By the final episode, in typical Umbrella Academy fashion, everything has gone wrong and the world is ending. In order to escape, the Sparrows and the Umbrellas end up heading through a portal inside of a hotel their no-longer dead father built, which takes them into yet another alternate reality - Hotel Oblivion.

And that's the part of the finale which makes sense. On the orders of their awful father Reginald Hargreeves, seven of the crew try to toll the seven bells that stop the end of the world and defeat their guardian; while they succeed, Allison realises doing so is killing them, so, obviously, she kills her clearly alien father and resets the universe. Again.

In doing so, she lands them in an alternate reality where their billionaire father's name is everywhere - but their troublesome powers are gone. Allison rushes off to her daughter, Diego runs off into the sunset with Lila and, well, nobody knows what could be coming next.

Could this new reality be a kind of purgatory, following the deaths of some key characters? Why is Reginald doing any of this? After three seasons fans are no closer to knowing the truth behind the Umbrella Academy.

The show's fans were left so dumbfounded by this ending they took to Twitter to vent their frustration, @gnfflower posted: "The ending of the Umbrella Academy Season 3 has me f****d me up like WTF just happened."

But the vast majority of viewers took the season's ending as a chance to share memes about the series', typically, left-field crazy ending.

Twitter user @cherabby, shared a still from 'Knives Out' saying: "Me, every time a new season of the Umbrella Academy comes out"; while @makonianthia shared a shot of Robert Sheehan (Klaus), saying: "me trying to figure out what the ending of Umbrella Academy Season 3 means."

Some love the series for its unpredictability and thought the ending was another example of the stellar writing that has made the show a cult hit. Twitter user @scintillavy said it was a "Classic Umbrella Academy season ending.

"It will leave you with so many questions and sometimes wishing you have Five’s time travel powers so you could go see the next season right away."

Fans hungry to find out more about the new reality the Hargreeves and Co face will be glad to hear the show's creator Steve Blackman is in talks with Netflix over a fourth season, though he revealed to Esquire that it is likely to be last ever season of Umbrella Academy.

He said: "I think inevitably if we got a Season 4, it’s going towards an endgame, at a certain point, I’m not sure where we’d go after Season 4.

"We have to be careful. My plan for next year is not to continually tread on the same ground we have before. It’s a challenge to come up with a new way to subvert this storyline, and I think we have an idea how to do that."
