Fans 'cringe' as they watch trailer to Grease prequel series Rise of the Pink Ladies

The first official trailer for a Grease prequel series has been released, but fans have predicted the show will “flop” after watching the “cringe” trailer. Paramount+ dropped the trailer for Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies during The Drew Barrymore Show on Tuesday (February 7), alongside a special appearance by the four female leads.

The musical series is a prequel to the iconic 1978 musical starring John Travolta and the late Dame Olivia Newton-John, taking place four years before the original film. Its official synopsis reads: “In 1954, before rock ‘n’ roll ruled, before the T-Birds were the coolest in the school, four fed-up outcasts dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.”

The series stars Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara as the founding members of the titular high school clique. It is written and executive produced by Annabel Oakes (Atypical, Minx), who also serves as showrunner.

Since the trailer dropped on Tuesday, fans have taken to social media to share their dismay at the “cringe” clips, with many questioning why the series has been made in the first place. On Twitter, @tsotlhannibal said: “This is so gonna get cancelled after one season.”

@black666_____ agreed: “The rise of another flop, sadly.”

@TheeCinemaKid said: “That was awful to all the senses necessary to enjoy cinema.” @hottoudoggou added: “Never cringed harder.”

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies will premiere on Thursday, April 6 on Paramount+ in the US and Canada, with UK viewers able to catch it on the streaming platform the following day.
