A postmortem is taking place and the results will reveal his cause of death in the coming days.

Gardai are carrying out an investigation but the incident is believed to be a tragic accident.

A local said the family were visiting the area and have family connections from Ballinagare.

Cllr Tom Crosby said: “It’s shocking, I don’t know the family.

“But it’s very sad. It’s a close knit community and they will certainly be there to support the family at this time and through the coming days, weeks and months.

“And I send my condolences on behalf of Roscommon County Council.”

Cllr Paschal Fitzmaurice added: “I just have sympathy with the family on this tragic incident, it’s an absolutely terrible tragedy.”

The family were being comforted by their friends and relatives last night.

Gardai confirmed that a family liaison officer has been appointed to support them as they prepare to make funeral arrangements.

A technical examination of the crash scene was carried out by forensic collision investigators yesterday.

Gardai appealed for witnesses to the tragic incident.

A spokesman said: “Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to them.

“Anyone with information can contact Boyle Garda Station on 071 966 4620 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.”
