Family pay tribute to football-mad teen, 16, who died of fatal asthma attack

A football-mad teenager who died of a fatal asthma attack had an "infectious personality" and was "loved by many", according to tributes from his heartbroken family.

Harley Barnbrook, 16, tragically died after suffering the attack on Tuesday, February 15, in the car park of Merry Hill Shopping Centre near Dudley, West Midlands.

The teen was rushed to hospital but nothing could be done to save him.

Now his fellow teammates have paid tribute to the "grassroots" football player, while Wolves fans gave a round of applause in his honour during their match with Leicester City today (Feb 20).

Releasing a statement to BlackCountryLive on behalf of Harley's family, a friend said: "Harley was well known in grassroots football and played for many teams in the area including Dudley Town, Halesowen Town Colts and most recently Lye Town.

"Harley was loved by many of teammates and had an infectious personality.

"Harley lived for sports (especially football) where it was a family affair with dad, mom and often grandad coming along to support Harley and the team.

"Following Tuesday's tragic asthma attack Harley was taken to Russell's Hall Hospital where he received excellent and compassionate care from the staff within ICU.

"Mom Kelly, dad Dean and sister Sienna would like to pay thanks to all the staff during this extremely difficult time, the continuity of care received was truly touching."

They added: "The Football game on Monday, February 21, held at the Dell Stadium in Brierley Hill between Dudley Town Juniors and Lye Town juniors will hold a minute's silence before the game, followed by a clap on the sixteenth minute.

"Many of the players from both teams have played with Harley over the years for various teams.

"All proceeds from the game will be donated to the family, in what will be an emotional evening for all in attendance."

After a call was made on Wolverhampton Wanderers fan page, The Wolfpack, Wolves fans held a round of applause in the 16th minute of the Premier League game against Leicester to commemorate Harley.

A spokesperson for Merry Hill Shopping Centre previously said: "A visitor suffered an isolated medical emergency in one of the car parks at the centre.

"Our security team first-aiders immediately sought to provide assistance while paramedics were en-route.

"The individual was subsequently transferred to hospital and our thoughts are with their friends and family at this extremely difficult time."
