A family was left outraged after doctors reportedly told them that their dead relative's left eye was taken, and either a "rat" or "someone" at the hospital was the perpetrator.

Fantush was admitted to the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital in Patna, India, on Nov. 14 with a gunshot wound and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) the following day. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday, India Today reported.

On Saturday, the hospital moved Fantush's body from the ICU to the morgue, which is when his family noticed his left eyeball was missing. They believed it was due to negligence since there was a scalpel nearby.

The hospital then opened an investigation to determine what happened.

"Either someone has taken out the eye or a rat has gnawed at the eye. In both situations, it is our fault. Further action will be taken after investigation," Dr Vinod Kumar, superintendent of Nalanda hospital, told India Today.

Two nurses who were on duty when the incident occurred were suspended for negligence while local police continue investigating the incident.

Local police are also investigating the incident.
