Families in Sydney's south have been evacuated from their homes after a major water pipeline burst, inundating houses and smashing windows with torrents of water.

Emergency crews were called to Binya Place in Como about 1pm on Friday to a ruptured 1.5-metre-wide pipe shooting out a deluge of water.

The blowout caused significant flooding and water damage to surrounding properties with some residents forced to flee their homes.

The pipeline connects to Woronora Dam which supplies water to Sutherland, Cronulla, Engadine, Heathcote, Helensburgh and Stanwell Park.

Sydney Water said network technicians had isolated the main and repairs on the pipeline were underway as of 5pm.

"Network technicians were on site assessing a leak on the main when it burst," a spokeswoman said.

"Crews have isolated the main and repairs are underway.

"Customer advocates are on site working with impacted customers and assessing the damage."

NSW State Emergency Services said some homes had been severely impacted by water damage while others sustained only superficial damage.

One family told Nine News they had been forced out of their home and will need to find alternative accommodation, saying the deluge collapsed part of their roof and destroyed belongings.

"It was pretty terrifying," Michelle Bunch said.

"Went to check that everything was okay down there, came back up and it was hitting our house

"It was smacking against the windows, we thought they were going to smash apart."
