On Thursday, the Atlanta Falcons agreed to terms with free-agent safety Justin Simmons on a reported one-year, $8 million deal. It took a few days, but the team officially announced Simmons’ signing on Sunday afternoon.
The two-time Pro Bowler will join a Falcons secondary featuring safety Jessie Bates III, cornerback A.J. Terrell and nickel Dee Alford. Plus, Simmons comes to Atlanta just days after the team acquired outside linebacker Matthew Judon from the Patriots for a third-round pick.
Judon and Simmons represent major upgrades to the Falcons’ secondary and front seven. According to the team website, both players have picked their uniform numbers. Judon will switch to the No. 15 while Simmons will continue wearing the No. 31 he wore in Denver.
Both Pro Bowl additions will share their number with someone else on the team’s 90-man roster. Judon has the same number as wide receiver Dylan Drummond, and Simmons now wears the same number as fellow safety Dane Cruikshank.
